Public Profile: I am looking for a non academic support job in education sector because I believe I have got the knowledge, experience, qualities and skills to perform the role effectively. I am relocating to West Midlands and wish to pursue my chosen career in the area.

I worked as a Teaching Assistant in a mainstream secondary school for almost 2 years from 2003 – 2004, Youth & Community Outreach Worker at a Sixth Form College since November 2004 and as Professional Student Welfare Adviser since 2006. My additional responsibilities have included Economics Tutor, Personal Tutor and project management. I have working with a range of mixed ability students access the whole curriculum at all key stages.

I have worked very closely with a range of teaching staff, including SENCO, HOD and class teachers. I gave 1:1 support in the classroom to special need students with a range of needs including Autistic/ Behavioural/ ADHD/ Literacy and Numeracy difficulties, EAL etc.

In my current role as a Student Welfare Adviser. I have developed and manage a Community Mentoring Programme. This programme has been developed to support students at risk of dropping Post 16 Education and those who are underachieving.

The mentors were selected from the Local community with an understanding of the issues faced by these young people. We trained these community mentors with the help of an outside agency. The Mentoring scheme has been running for four years and is proving to be a great success with 90% retention rates and excellent feedback from students and teaching staff.

I taught Economics at College for six month to AS level students and covered two tutor AS groups for a year in addition to my present job responsibilities. My work involved regular and in-depth assessment of students’ individual progress. I have worked with the Curriculum Team Leader including monitoring, recording, marking student’s coursework, assessing of student’s progress, keeping daily records and have carried out admin duties. I have also mastered new material aids and equipment. Part of my role included supporting visits, attending meetings, taking part in parent/student consultation evenings etc. I worked in partnership with teachers discussing students, helping them to realise their goals and potential in life

I work closely with college lecturers, head of faculty and the college management team to support the students and to raise the profile of the work that I am doing. I refer students to various other areas of support where I see fit, including professional counselling and special need assessments.

I work with the families of my students to ensure they are fully aware of their child’s needs and progress and to ensure the support and understanding continues in all areas of their life. I am able to speak community languages including Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu. This has proved to be invaluable in my communication with parents, students and members of the community. I enjoy working with children from all social and cultural backgrounds and support them to fulfil their targets.

I use a wide variety of computer skills to establish systems for the records involved in working with individuals’ students. These records are often of a confidential nature. I use Microsoft outlook, Microsoft word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet etc, on a daily basis.

I am aware and have been trained in the various preferred learning styles of students. This process of assessment is another invaluable tool for both teachers and support staff. In making full use of it, students are given the opportunity to get the most from the learning experience and are closer to achieving their full potential.

Teaching and learning in the classroom can be strongly enhanced using a variation of teaching approaches. Knowing the preferred learning styles of a student will enable and encourage active and enthusiastic learning from even the most challenging students.

I have worked with visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners on a 1:1 basis and have supported teachers to develop lesson plans to encourage all three styles.

I have done a variety of trainings including Child Protection Training.

My current work brings me into contact with students in post 16 education as well as year 10 and 11 students who have, for a variety of reasons, struggled to manage their own behaviour within the school and college system.

I have worked with the students in an attempt to give them a greater understanding of the reasons for the behaviour and how it forms a barrier to learning. I actively encourage this understanding as a way of empowering and motivating.

I am fully committed to Equality issues and I believe that equality can only be achieved if diversity is recognised and respected. In my current role I have trained students to deliver workshops on Equality and Diversity in High Schools. I am also a member of Equality and Diversity committee.

I would welcome the opportunity for further and continued self-development and would also welcome the opportunity to expand on any of my skills and abilities in an interview.
