I am a very confident and well motivated person driven by pupils’ success and I have a range of abilities. Throughout my life I have learnt to use these qualities to work both autonomously and as a team member, and welcome the opportunities to work and gain experience from established members of staff within a department. I have enjoyed the GTP course in both the secondary, and middle school setting but know my strengths lie with the older pupils. I gain so much job satisfaction from this age range and look forward to the challenges each new project presents. I am looking forward to my NQT year and feel I could offer valuable skills to your inspiring art department. I lead by example and set myself high standards and expect these same high standards from the pupils I teach. I promote a positive learning environment by mounting and displaying various pieces of work to help the students to strive to do their best. I am also a strong believer in the ‘power of praise’ and enjoy showing and helping pupils develop their basic skills thought encouragement and guidance. I have helped many students see that they have stronger abilities in art than they thought possible. Most recently discovering a gifted and talented student who didn’t believe to be good enough for GCSE and now she is producing outstanding piece of coursework in year 10. I believe in AFL strongly and have successfully used the AFL principles, especially good feedback on how to improve their work and move forward within my lessons; I believe it helps support some of the important elements with regards to the areas of inclusion within education today.
I feel I have a wide work experience and a lot to offer a school with my personal and professional experience as an artist within my specialist area, which is art and design/mixed media. Most of my work leads into art textiles and where possibly looking into contemporary craft, as this is an area of interest and strength for me. Also an area I enjoy personally as well as professionally through teaching. I have a broad range of experience within the National Curriculum. I am running my own schemes of work with key stage 3 after having started to use the department schemes but then being given a free hand to develop interesting projects around my strengths. I use my schemes of work to help make the pupils aware of taking risks through development as my schemes are often there for guidance as I want pupils to make their own judgement about art to develop their analytical skills as well as their technical skills. I am currently running the art department schemes with GCSE pupils whilst developing my own bank of schemes and ideas, ready to work within a school for my NQT year. I am always keen and receptive to new ideas and can accept direction from more experienced members of staff within the department and around the school in general. I have also proved to be fast thinking with the ability to develop ideas on the spot with cover lessons and A level classes I team teach, I am now gaining more experience in A level by visiting other school where I’m working closing with the Head of Art advancing my skills in teaching key stage 5. I use ICT as much as possible in lessons and I am always keen to advance my skills in this area and I am a fast learner in doing so. I am beginning to use the interactive white boards to enhance learning by showing video and demos to the pupils and getting them to present and interact with their own art work as well as them helping me deliver and present the lessons. I use Photoshop across the keys stages helping them enhance their work further and I am currently looking into new ways to enhance technology into my teaching. I am currently involved in ‘Learning to Learn’ (Building Learning Power) sessions most recently assisting with a sixth form and year 9 sessions last term, I try to use these principles where appropriate in lessons to help aid learning. I find it works especially well with my SEN class. The school recently sent me on a one day course which has helped me become an arts award advisor for bronze and silver level. I am looking forward to helping pupils gain recognition with this award especially by inspiring those who never thought themselves to be good within the arts, this award should help show them that everyone with a drive for success can find their niche within the arts world. I am regularly on hand at break and lunch times to help pupils with coursework and I regularly attend art clubs after school to help GCSE students. I am looking into developing extra workshops with key stage 3 to give them insight to technical skills that they could develop into their GCSE studies or just to for their own enjoyment. As part of my second placement I teach at the middle school, which not only helps me get the full range of key stage 3 pupils but it also gives me great insight into key stage 2. It has helped me realise the importance of art in key stage 2. I have really enjoyed my experience at the middle school and I have worked well with the Head of Art there. Art is a great passion for me, being able to teach on the GTP and work alongside experienced teachers has given me the opportunities to pass on my knowledge to others. I have found great joy in helping, influencing and educating young people and to be able to make a difference. Whilst training on the GTP, I have acquired more knowledge and more hands on skills by becoming part of a well supportive and organised department. I have developed strong individual working skills as well as having become a strong team player. I am also part of a form group to a year 10 class. I check homework diaries, support struggling pupils, liaise with Year Tutors, attend Tutor meetings, I attend assemblies, follow up incidents, and I have developed a good relationship with the form members as well as having a good working relationship with there proper form tutor. Pupils within this form know they can come to me with any concerns and I help some pupils out with pastoral affairs where appropriate and agreed with the Head of Year. I have also help my form run charity events for inter house competitions, at this point in time we are organising a lunch time battle of the bands. Leading up to my GTP year I had numerous experiences of working in a school environment, firstly on my second year of my degree at UCE I had a module in art and design in schools. This gave me the chance to work within a group and gave me experience of working in a primary and secondary school. I learnt the disciplines of deadlines, time management and prioritising to help my group, get the best out of the pupils that we had the opportunity to work with. Working as part of a team and bouncing ideas together with other students was a good learning curve for me and made me realise that I am good at communicating well with students and my peers. On my degree studies we were encouraged to work one to one in a studio environment, giving us the opportunity to observe others at practice and to help each other get the best results out of our work. This was a good learning tool for me and has been a key element to helping further with my teaching experience. In my final years of university I experimented with photography and my final show including lots of photographic work manipulated on Photoshop. I have also taken photos of a local band which is featured within some of my degree work. I took part in the Students Associate Scheme at level one. This experience made me realise which area of teaching I wanted to be involved in, getting first hand experience in English, Maths and Art lessons. I also took part on level two of the course in Perry Barr, which was more challenging, giving me the opportunity to plan parts of lessons and deliver them to small groups of the class, mainly SEN classes. I have volunteered once a week at a High School. During my time in the school I have also took part in workshops for the gifted and talented, most recently assisting the artist in residence with the Yr. 11, felt making, which was work for the community which became part of an exhibition. I help run a play scheme at my local leisure centre, working in the school holidays with children aged 5 to 13. I organise the timetables and activities that take place, I liaise with parents over any concerns and I am generally in charge of the welfare and behaviours of the children. I have had constant good lesson observations over my GTP year and am highly regarded in the department for my determination, reliability and resourcefulness, I and I’m looking for the opportunity to work at a school as their newly appointed art teacher which would be an honour and the perfect way for me to develop all that I've learnt through enriching my experience further. I will work well with your well established department and I am looking forward to using my creative commitment in enhancing my skills in regards to new technologies, this is an area of passion for me to develop, I know that it would give me the opportunity to gain even more enjoyment and satisfaction from working with young people and make me feel honoured to act as an important role model in social, cultural, spiritual and moral development of young people. |
