Public Profile: Supporting statement for Pastoral post
I would very much like a post which would offer me an exciting opportunity to use the skills acquired over the seven years I worked as a Year Team Leader and currently as Head of Key Stage 4 and Every Child Matters Co-ordinator, whilst providing me with fresh challenges in a different school context.

I have always believed that education should take the whole child into account to encourage the development of effective and happy learners. I am looking for a post which would provide the opportunity to use the diverse abilities I have developed whilst working in Pastoral roles. I enjoy organising events with students and have successfully facilitated a variety of extra-curricular day and residential visits, Theme Days, charity events, Prom, Year Book, regular assemblies etc. I strongly believe these wider educational opportunities have a positive impact on improving students’ attitude to learning and help them to foster positive relationships in school and in their wider lives.

I have a genuine commitment towards students and their personal growth. My expectations of students in terms of their behaviour and achievement is high, and I pride myself on my ability to build relationships with students which have a positive impact on their learning, in both my role as a Pastoral Leader and classroom teacher.

In my current post I have been able to develop my leadership skills due to my line manager, the Assistant Head Pastoral, going on secondment for two years. In his absence I have led on whole school areas like attendance, behaviour and child protection and have managed the team of Year co-ordinators as well as teams of Tutors. In my role as Every Child Matters Co-ordinator I led the whole school initiative to gain the Healthy Schools Award and am co-ordinating the implementation of a Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Project with support from the Primary Healthcare Trust and the Local Authority. I regularly attend, organise and chair multi-agency meetings for Looked After Children and children at risk, and am responsible for providing individual support plans to ensure all children can positively access educational opportunities.

Over the past two years I have been responsible for the improvement of attendance . I led the development and implementation of strategies which have resulted in a significant lowering of Persistent Absentee rates from 9 % in 2007 to 3.2 % in 2009 and an improvement in overall attendance. This improvement contributed towards achievement of an outstanding Ofsted in January 2009. The success of the attendance strategies have hinged on teamwork, with the Local Authority Lead Attendance Practitioner and our ESW working closely with school staff, students and parents. This success resulted from involving and listening to staff and students; coaching staff; using data to inform actions and developing a clear action plan. My work with attendance has enabled me to consider different ways of effecting whole school change and to develop my leadership skills; it also made me realise how exhilarating leading on whole school initiatives can be. This is one of the reasons I now feel prepared to move into a more Senior Leadership role.

I work closely with the parents and carers of students and am able to build trusting, positive relationships with adults and children. I feel my experience would allow me to make a positive impact on the delivery of all strands of the Every Child Matters Agenda. I am particularly well-equipped to develop the ‘Stay Safe’ and ‘Stay Healthy’ strands in a creative way. I have worked with the school nurse and Child and Adolescent Mental Health teams on promoting a variety of aspects of students’ health and well being and have been involved with developing safeguarding practices. I was responsible for successfully setting up an Extended Multi Agency Drop-in Centre in school.

A large part of my Head of Key Stage 4 role involves monitoring student progress, behaviour and attendance using a variety of data and also evaluating and planning how to use the information the data provides to promote students’ academic and personal development. I feel involving parents in this process is often the key to children succeeding and I feel building relationships with parents is one of my areas of strength.

I have always held the view that learning should be enjoyable. In planning my own lessons I aim to ensure students are given the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways and am committed to developing new dimensions to my own teaching, and enjoy trying new approaches and using new technologies to stimulate and motivate students.

I am a good classroom teacher and currently teach History at GCSE and A Level and deliver a BTEC Employability course. As part of a very successful History Team I regularly guided students to academic success across Key Stages 3 and 4. I pride myself on being an effective classroom practitioner.

I am currently responsible for the work of an Inclusion Centre and have a real interest in improving student behaviour to enable them to be effective learners. I have enjoyed and learned a lot from delivering CPD sessions for NQT’s on a ‘Getting It Right’ behaviour strategy; Child Protection training and the role of the Form Tutor this year.

I am acknowledged by my current Leadership Team and Pastoral Team as an effective team leader. I am well organised and feel I lead the Pastoral Team in an emotionally intelligent way. They can rely on me to make decisions and to provide them with the support and resources they need to carry out the very important roles of Tutor and Head of Year. I work with our Leadership Team on a number of whole school issues, including attendance and behaviour, and thoroughly enjoy the chances I have been provided with to be involved in strategic planning. In 2008 I was responsible for providing data and evidence for outstanding Ofsted inspection and met with the inspectors looking at the Personal Development and Wellbeing of our students and Academic Tracking.

The professional development I have undertaken, in particular the NCSL course Leading from the Middle, has allowed me to reflect on my leadership style and how I can further develop my skills to make me a more effective leader.

If I was given the opportunity to take up a new post, I feel the school would be gaining a successful Pastoral Leader and classroom teacher who is adaptable and eager to develop further. I am reliable, a good communicator, motivator and team player who would be able to foster positive relationships with staff, students, parents, representatives of outside agencies and the wider community. I would relish the opportunity to experience working in a new school environment.
