My Teaching Philosophy
We can all remember our favourite teachers from school - those whose infectious enthusiasm for learning rubbed off on us, and inspired us to go for our dreams. Without those teachers I do not think I would have achieved the academic success I have today, and so it is my passion to give children the same passion for learning. Every child, regardless of their background, deserves to achieve their full potential and be first-rate contributors to the communities they are part of. I work hard to build a classroom which represents a fair and safe environment that allows children to take risks in their learning, reflect their successes and where everyone feels respected and listened to. I use positive behaviour management strategies and provide colourful and interactive display boards that help to prompt and stimulate learning in my class. I think that it is very important that children’s work is displayed and changed regularly. My teaching is fun, engaging all children and stimulating enthusiasm for learning. I achieve this through well prepared plans and resources, in addition to a dynamic teaching style. I have high expectations for all children and allow them to develop their independence through reflecting on their own learning, and using the constructive feedback given about their work to further their own understanding. I always set clear child friendly learning objectives and success criteria that are reviewed at the end of every lesson, and enjoy using the two stars and a wish strategy to provide constructive feedback and target setting. Professional Experience and Background The PGCE programme has given me vast experience of teaching in a range of schools. My first school placement was attached to a special education unit. A challenging experience, it equipped me with the essential skills to provide inclusion in my classroom. I carefully match work to individual needs which are then monitored by regular assessments in order for progress to be made and recorded. In my last placement I successfully delivered a creative curriculum to a year 2 class and also had experience administering and assessing SATs papers alongside my class teacher. In addition to this I had the opportunity to run interactive KS1 worship sessions. It was also during this placement that I wrote my dissertation on how constructive talk and group discussion in the classroom can improve children’s writing. This was stimulated by the new initiative by Pie Corbett called ‘talk for writing’. Such findings and teaching strategies could contribute towards raising standards in School. Since graduating I have been employed as a supply teacher by a variety of different schools, working with both key stages. This has given me the opportunity to develop a wide range of teaching strategies to engage and motivate children under difficult circumstances. It was whilst doing supply that I received my first teaching position. The headteacher praised my ability to take a struggling class and turn it around in a short period of time. Partnership with Parents and the Community After moving to York in 2005 I started working as a volunteer kids club leader for a local charity called Global. This organisation focuses on providing diversionary activities in disadvantaged areas, liaising with parents and engaging relevant agencies. At Global I work alongside children, many of whom come from socio-economically deprived backgrounds or exhibit challenging behaviour, to provide a positive role model and teach them life skills. It was whilst working for Global that I discovered how rewarding it is to influence and make a difference in the lives of children and young people, and was inspired to pursue teaching to be able to do this further. I feel that parents play a crucial role in helping their children to learn. It is important to me to seek information from parents and help them to understand how they can help their child, to achieve a holistic approach to teaching. Working for Global has given me the opportunity to build relationships with many families and I am therefore confident in engaging parents and carers in order to work with them cooperatively. Subject Interests My subject specialisms are Physical Education, Science and Art. Teaching netball is a particular strength of mine as I regularly trained and played for a women’s netball league in York. In my last school I had the opportunity to manage the school netball team. I could therefore offer your school netball club an experienced leader as I have recently completed a UKCC Level 1 netball coaching course from England Netball. My passion for science is highlighted by my degree specialism and experience in helping manage science workshops run by York University and NYBEP for national science week. In my experience, children learn science concepts best from hands on experience and I would therefore like to bring fresh ideas into teaching science creatively. My final specialism is in Art and Design which has been shown through my creative work on display boards in the schools I have worked in. I have also run community art and craft events and would be keen to organise similar activities for other extended school provision. Personal Qualities As an enthusiastic, caring and proven team member, I respect and value contributions made by my colleagues. This has been commented on in my placement appraisals, and shown by my contributions in staff meetings and dedication to my voluntary work. I enjoy the involvement of the parents and governors within the school, and recognise the impact they have in making a school successful within the wider community. It has been recognised by my class teacher and mentors that my communication skills throughout my teaching practice are outstanding, and I take pleasure in building up an excellent rapport with staff, parents, and more importantly, the children. I would really value the opportunity to make a positive and effective contribution to your primary school as I feel I have much to offer and hope you will consider my application favourably. |
