I am currently undertaking a PGCE KS2/3 MFL at University, which is a professional graduate degree that gives experience of the transition between Key stage 2 and 3 through teaching in both key stages. At Key Stage 2 this involves working as a classroom teacher to teach all subjects across the curriculum. At Key Stage 3, this involves teaching Modern Foreign Languages to a range of year groups. At the end of the course, I will have completed three school placements.
I have studied modules that relate to Key stage 2 such as The Core Curriculum (English, Maths and Science), Modern foreign languages: learning and teaching at key stage 2, Professional development and experience in a key stage 2 context and Professional practice and values. These modules have given me specific subject knowledge about subjects that I would be teaching in Key stage 2 and general knowledge about pedagogy. The modules that relate to Key stage 3 are Modern foreign languages: learning and teaching at key stage 3 and Professional development and experience in a key stage 3 context. Having taken modules that relate to both key stages and having worked in both primary and secondary schools has been invaluable to me, as it has have given me knowledge and experience about the transition that pupils will go through from primary school to secondary school. For my first placement, I spent six weeks teaching French in a secondary school in Birmingham. The placement was extremely rewarding as it gave me first-hand experience of working with children from a range of backgrounds and abilities in an inner city school. It also enabled me to put into practice the strategies that I had learnt at university regarding differentiation and behaviour management which in my opinion are key to effective teaching. During my time in the school, I learnt new behaviour management strategies from other teachers which were very useful. In addition I found that my subject knowledge of French improved greatly as a result of teaching the language on a daily basis. I am currently in my second placement in a primary school in Sandwell where I am teaching a Year 4 class. The school has a creative curriculum whereby foundation subjects are taught through a cross-curricular topic. This has enabled me to be more creative with my lessons and activities and innovative in my teaching. The pupils in the class have a broad range of abilities, and this has allowed me to improve on my strategies for differentiation so that my teaching allows for inclusion and for all pupils to achieve. I am a very thorough and reflective teacher who has high expectations of all pupils in my care. I think that enjoyment has a big impact on progress and achievement, and I try to ensure that pupils reach their potential through my lesson planning, knowledge of my pupils and their needs and building good relationships with them. Pupils learn best when they are interested have high self-esteem, and I endeavour to create a relaxed and motivating environment in every lesson. Furthermore I am an open minded, energetic and extrovert individual who enjoys working with both children and adults. I am able to develop good relationships with pupils and colleagues alike and this was reflected in my job as a Classroom Language Assistant in France (teaching English to French students). I also possess a high level of communication skills, which was required in my undergraduate degree of French and Mandarin to communicate with a variety of people. This was also demonstrated in my first school placement as I interacted with pupils, parents and teachers in other departments on a daily basis. I also think that a teacher must be aware of different cultures and traditions, as pupils will come from a variety of backgrounds. Having travelled to China and France in my year abroad, and having visited various countries on holidays has given me the opportunity to experience new cultures and become aware of the many faiths and beliefs that surround us in our multi-faith society. I believe this is essential in developing relationships with pupils, but also to inform lesson planning by catering for specific needs. I am dedicated to working to the best of my ability as a teacher to ensure that ‘every child matters’ and that every child achieves their potential. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my application with you further. |
