I am currently a trainee teacher with the Birmingham Primary Training Partnership (BPTP). The qualification I hope to achieve is a 1 year full time; School centred PGCE with qualified teacher status, which will be awarded by Birmingham City University. I am confident that I will successfully complete my course in July. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far on the course. My experience as a trainee teacher has taught me the important roles of a teacher, which are to provide every child the opportunity to learn in every lesson through understanding, gaining knowledge and learning new skills. It is therefore important for teachers to have good pedagogy, be engaging, enthusiastic, use a variety of different teaching strategies, reinforce learning and provide praise and encouragement.
As a professional educator I understand that I have a statutory duty to the following; I must include every child so that they have equal opportunities to learn and be successful. I must follow the policy ‘Every Child Matters.’ The outcome of this policy is to provide children the support they need to be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution, and achieve economic well-being so that they are ready to learn and be educated. It will be my statutory duty to deliver the National curriculum so that I am providing children with their full entitlement to learning, as equality of opportunity is essential. I can ensure that pupils have a chance to succeed no matter what their individual needs. I also have a duty to liaise and interact with parents and carers in order to create a working partnership to further support children’s learning and progression. I have good knowledge of the Primary Curriculum and I understand the importance of delivering the core subjects in lessons, especially English and Mathematics. English is vital for developing skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. These skills enable children to be confident communicators, and be able to express their views and thoughts. Mathematics is important for the development of logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Much of my course has concentrated on gaining knowledge for the pedagogy of Mathematics and English, and how to deliver this knowledge effectively. I intend to continue to gather knowledge through research and experience in all subjects of the National Curriculum. I feel that my particular strength is P.E. as I studied and gained a Sport and Exercise Science Degree at Coventry University. I have also had an interest in competitive swimming since the age of 7 and have competed in several County and Midland Championships. My interest led me to become an ASA qualified Level 2 Swimming Teacher, I taught children to swim between the ages of 3 and 16 years. I would therefore welcome the opportunity to be involved in P.E. I understand that behaviour management is important to be able to teach effectively. I have learned many skills from my experience in school. For my first placement I taught at St George’s Church of England School in Ladywood. Their behaviour policy included focusing up on the positive behaviour of children through rewarding, to create a positive ethos in the School. Some of the rewards I used included golden time for those children who maintained School and classroom rules, as well as stickers and raffle tickets for positive behaviour. The whole School also came together for a ‘Celebration assembly’ once a week to reward a ‘star pupil’ and ‘worker of the week.’ These rewards ensured that all children were given equal opportunities regardless of their ability and show that the focus was up on trying. This encouraged children to work to the best of their ability. I have also had experience dealing with inappropriate behaviour. The policy that I used was to firstly give a verbal reminder of the desired behaviour. However if the inappropriate behaviour continued then a 1st verbal warning was given explaining to the child what will happen if they continue. If the behaviour continued further then the child was sent to another class for 5 minutes and may also be written in the behaviour book. Another issue I have come across in School is children with English as an Alternate Language (EAL). It is important for teachers to have a good understanding and be sensitive to the needs of these children to ensure understanding, language development and learning. Some of the strategies I have seen include sitting EAL children with someone who speaks the same first language as them but who has more advanced English. Another included having lots of visual support, such as pictures to help with their understanding of what is going on. Inclusion of all children no matter what their individual needs is essential for the role of a teacher and I feel that I have the necessary skills to ensure this. I have taught a wide range of abilities from Special Educational Needs to the talented and gifted children during my time in school. This has taught me to be able to differentiate lessons so that I can ensure the learning and progression of all children in my class. I understand that formative assessment is essential for planning so I can deliver lessons that address the needs of all the children. It also enables me to set targets for improvement. I also know that it is important to carry out summative assessments so that I can follow the progress of children’s learning. I look forward to improving my professional development to meet the challenges ahead. |
