Public Profile: In 2004 I started working at a local nursery where I immediately knew my career aspiration was to work with children aged between 3-7 years. I enjoyed helping children learn and develop and I felt a great sense of achievment in doing so. This was reinforced during the 3 years I spent completing my B.A Hons Primary Initial Teaching Education degree. My degree and the experiences during it have enhanced my teaching skills and further enhanced my desire to teach and inspire children to learn and develop.

My degree covered all subjects across the Early Years and key stage 1 Curriculum. I had teaching practice in both a nursery and a year 2 classroom giving me a broad perspective of teaching within these age groups. This helped me combine the theories I had studied at University with practical expereince in the classroom; thus giving me a good understanding of effective teaching practices and the National Curriculum. Whilst studying at University I worked as a play worker at an after school and holiday play scheme. Activites included Forest School, Trips, Creative activites, music and dance, which gave me an opportuntiy to learn new techniques of engaging with children of different ages. I am a great believer that children learn more effectively when they are happy and engaged with the topics being covered.

I acknowledge that every child is an individual and needs different methods of teaching to maximise their potential. I have worked with children requiring teaching support and have worked with children who have behavourial issues, which I found challenging and valuable in my understanding and ability to teach a mix of characters and personalities. At university I was inspired by the work of Grainger and Todd who outlined the need for developing speaking and listening into the curriculum; as a tool for enhancing a child's competence and confidence to learn through speech. I actively encourage children to participate in class raising any questions they may have; and asking children for their inputs in topics being covered. A recent example of this is where I covered a topic about wellbeing and animals. One of the children suggested making a veterinary practice where all of the children became engaged through the use of role play. The children found this very interesting and exciting, and the hands on concept helped them empathise with the themes being covered.

During my current role I have been involved with Ofsted, and am a recognised member of the team to liase with the Ofsted inspections. I like to feel that I can bring my experiences in this area to Cropthorne First School. I have been involved in parents meetings and outside seminars such as the launch of the new Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Parents evenings are vital in building a link between the school and the home. I believe that children perform better in school when their parents actively take interest in what they study, and when they ask questions and ask their child to discuss what they have learnt. I take great pride in my classroom and the quality of my own administration and planning. I plan all of the my lessons around the Early years foundation stage and National Curriculum and actively look in text books, internet articles and magazines for inspiration on how to teach in new ways and cover all necessary elements of the National Curriculum. I like to incorpoate the use of ICT and media in lessons as I feel that children benefit more by having access to a variety of information channels. The use of ICT is vital in a child's development as it prepares them both for further ICT work at school and teaches them about the significance of ICT outside of school. I believe that I could share my experiences in using interactive boards, Laptops and intercative games in Cropthotne First School.

During my current position I have been responsible for the submission of a grant/funding proposal. Last year, I submitted a proposal for funding to enable the setting to improve the outside play area. The proposal included detailed links with the Early Years Foundation stage. I submitted a detailed proposal, outlining how a rubber matted play surface would enable children of all ages to take controlled risks such as balancing, climbing and riding bikes, thus greatly building upon their self confidence and physical development. The proposal also outlined how the canopy would enable the children to access the play area in any weather, thus getting daily exercise and adding to a healthy lifestyle which I strongly promote.
I have also been responsible for work experience students interested in teaching, as well as NVQ and Early years professional status degree students.

I am aware that teaching is extremley demanding and proposes many challenges every day; however I am very determined to teach and enjoy those challanges and demands. I find teaching both rewarding and enjoyable and have known for a long time that I want my own classroom where I can help children learn and develop as individuals.
