TEACHING HISTORY

07-2006 – 07-2009 George Salters Collegiate Academy, Claypit Lane West Bromwich, B70 9UW
KS3 Co-ordinator for Physical Education and Teacher of PE.
The past five years have seen a remarkable transformation in the fortunes of this school which it has been a privilege and massive learning experience to have been part of, becoming an Academy on 1st September 2007. In every conceivable and quantifiable way, the Academy has made significant improvement.
In particular, our external examination results have risen dramatically:
 At GCSE 5 A*-C there has been an incredible rise from 16% in 2003 to 96% in 2009. Indeed, this achievement was heralded by the Prime Minister in a White Paper on Education as an example of how our partnership with Shireland Collegiate Academy has flourished and produced amazing success
 Key Stage 3 results were our best ever last year and results in Key Stage 5 are similarly impressive
In addition to examination results, both the 2005 Ofsted report and the 2009 HMI report acknowledge that we are an Academy "where every child really does matter". During the 2009 Ofsted inspection I was observed and achieved a good for my teaching of HRF within sport. As a school we are proud of this observation since, on a daily basis, we strive to meet the varied individual needs of our students, both academically and pastoral. The Academy also celebrates its rich multi-cultural diversity. Again, Offside described our Academy as "one world in one school." This has given me the opportunity to work with students from various backgrounds and develop my work with EAL students especially from Poland.
The most important development in the Academy has been its human resources, where they have now recruited a highly qualified and skilled teaching and support staff. Inspectors and advisors who visit us invariable comment on the expertise, enthusiasm and commitment of the staff. However, there has also been a massive development in study support opportunities and many enhancements to the site fabric and learning environment, which are equal to any in Sandwell. In particular, the ICT facilities are now amongst the best in the borough.
To conclude, George Salter is poised for another year of exciting innovation, development and improvement. We will continue our drive for excellence and to pursue the noble goals articulated by Michael Alexander:
"Our aim is still for our school to be the best... a school without failure, where all children leave school having identified a talent, a skill, an intelligence, through which they can become whatever they want to be"

Supporting Statement: The following was used as part of my application for promotion to KS3PE Co-ordinator to give potential employers an idea of where I am currently with my professional development and give an indication of what I could bring to their schools respectively.
Over the last few years the PE department led by the previous Key stage Co-ordinator have developed a continuum of objectives for each focus sport/activity. Which have been integrated into differentiated Schemes of Work which enables years 7 to 11 to work towards achieving outcomes at a rate suitable to them. Current SOW highlight learning outcomes, skill development, literacy, numeracy, ICT, assessment tasks, gifted and talented and ECM. If I were to be successful in obtaining this post in consultation with the PE department and teacher specialism, I would take responsibility for moving current SOW forward to become more in line with the key concepts and processes of the new Programme of Study for Key Stage 3. I would also like to categorise focus sports/activities under the range and content of the new POS and clearly identify where key concepts and processes should be covered within SOW.
Although literacy is identified within current schemes of work, through the use of key words and a range of activities also designed to develop literacy. If I were to become KS3 Co-ordinator I would aim to provide a clear framework of literacy tasks to be carried out during each activity, which would in turn is assessed against the evaluating and improving performance strand.
Alongside updating current schemes of work there would be a need to update current assessment recording templates and criteria against which pupils are assessed. This would ensure teachers are assessing against new attainment targets set out by the current POS. Assessment is an area in which I feel needs developing further as although as a department we currently assess pupils on two strands at the end of every unit, consistency of levelling is often unclear. To highlight this point some pupils who change teacher at the end of an academic year, occasionally fail to improve by even a sub-level or even regress due to inconsistency between staff. I would offer solutions to ensuring that this no longer occurs such as team teaching during assessment phases.
The way in which National Curriculum levels are shared with pupils at the end of each activity has improved with the introduction of the Key Stage three pupil assessment cards. To allow pupils to record levels throughout the year. However I feel there is a need for pupils to be made more aware of what their levels mean and be provided with a clear instructions on how to progress to the next level. Therefore I would aim to produce pupil friendly level descriptors for each activity to be used as a working document and even included in KS3 planners.
Monitoring of behaviour and participation has greatly improved in the department over the last few years. I believe this is due to the high expectations and standards that have been set by the department, along with the introduction of subject reports. Which enable behaviour to be tracked and recorded. I would develop this further by conducting a weekly detention night for KS3 pupils.
The year seven activity projects, which were introduced at the beginning of this year, are a good starting point for the development of year 7 assessment. However these will need to be available for all activity areas and thought should be given to where these are best stored and used, I feel these should be stored on the gateway and made available for pupils to revisit or complete certain sections as homework. This could then eventually be developed for years 8 and 9.
Currently, when pupils begin in year 7 there no accurate assessment data provided for Physical Education from the feeder schools. I would aim to work alongside our School Sports Co-ordinator to get a procedure in place where pupils could be more accurately assessed during year 6. I feel going into primaries and supporting the delivery and assessment of KS2 PE or even inviting primary teachers to workshops held at school would raise standards for KS2 and bring it more in line with KS3. Also provide a more seamless transition into year 7. I also feel continuing to offer central venue primary festivals, to feeder primaries and making our Extra Curricular programme accessible to them would prepare KS2 pupils with an understanding and awareness of GCSA PE department policy before entry.

I would also aim to work alongside the KS4 Co-ordinator to ensure pupils leaving KS3 would experience seamless transition into 4. As a department we have already began to identify talented cohorts and put into place interventions designed to extend them. I feel it would be part of the KS3 role to identify suitable pupils for BTEC and GCSE courses at KS4.
Currently, our extra curricular programme is an integral part of our department it provides pupils with opportunities to participate in sports which they enjoy, play competitively within intra/inter school fixtures. All of which enable our students to further develop skills during lunchtime and after schools clubs offered. We also use a range of specialist coaches to extend the range and number of activities we offer, which also allows us to establish club links. In order to further improve our EC programme to cater for a greater number of pupils and further improve the quality of representative teams at key stage 3. I would carry out pupil consultations on type of activity to be included in EC programme, offer new activities such as bike club to improve fitness levels. Make more use of facilities such as big astro during dinner and investigate and provide pupils with more pathways to participate in after school sport.
Also linked to Extra Curricular, Key Stage 3 pupil’s makeup the highest percentage of attendance to holiday programmes, therefore this should be in ran consultation with the PE department as opposed to just asking the department to handout flyers and collect in returns. The department could identify target groups and pupils, along with input on content, which should go towards fulfilling certain Curriculum aims and objectives. I also feel this would allow the sports development team and holiday programme organisers to attract a more focused client group to work with.
Finally the reasons I feel I will be suitable for this post, firstly my recognition of where KS3 is currently and areas which need to be developed, along with clear vision of what needs to be done in order to drive it forward. I would also do my utmost to move our team and teams, forwards in order to benefit the progress and attainment of all pupils.
Hopefully this provides potential employers about my key experiences and motivations that feed my motivation to teach. It does give solutions and styles used and includes ideas on behaviour management which I feel has developed into a key strength of my teaching and has been highlighted by AST`S AND Ofsted inspectors alike. My aims are to continue to work with young adults and assist them to fulfil their potentials and goals. Short term I aim to work within a school which would benefit from the experiences I have had. Medium term would be to continue to climb the professional ladder in Physical Education first of all and long term would be to become a director of sport/ deputy head or to take on a more pastoral role as my career matures i.e. head of pastoral or house.
Yours sincerely,
Simon Evans
