Dear Sir or Madam, I have recently and successfully graduated from Aberystwyth University in the PGCE Secondary Drama and English course. I’ve gained an invaluable experience within my time at University, but also with both of my placements at Brecon High School and Llandovery College. At University I was able to receive a theoretical structure and understanding of education, and be able to apply my research within a practical environment whilst on my placements. Having had the opportunity to have both my placements at a comprehensive and independent school, I’ve been able to work with students of varying abilities; from gifted and talented, EAL, dyslexic, ADHD and autistic students. I have also learnt to create strategies, and incorporate interesting and engaging activities in different ways to inform students with varying educational needs. I fully understand that health and safety is imperative when working with all students, and I have always kept this as a key importance within my time in education. I have created, delivered and taught Drama at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 and worked with examination boards Edexcel and AQA for both Key Stage 4 and 5. I have also created and delivered English lessons at Key Stage 3, and taught PSHE. I was happily involved in extra-curricular activates such as Drama club, Film club, Amnesty International, Thinking Skills club and went on various school trips to see theatrical performances. I have learnt this year that as a teacher I’m enthusiastic about my subject, and I want to share that with the students I work along side with. I believe Drama is a subject which offers an opportunity for students to use thinking skills. This enables pupils to form an explorative and creative platform to play and devise with fellow students. This in turns create a safe and comfortable educational environment. I’m a fair and approachable teacher, but also firm. I’ve also been able to organise my work load effectively within a timely manner. After graduating from Winchester University I decided to travel and work abroad, I felt this was a positive experience and one that broadened my horizons and fully appreciate different cultures, ideas and beliefs. During this time I worked as a camp counsellor in America and thoroughly enjoyed working with young people. When I returned home I started working as a Learning Support Assistant and helped support students with educational and behavioural needs. I was then soon promoted to a Cover Supervisor; within this role I covered lessons when teachers were absent and guided students through the prospective lesson plan. Having this valuable experience has further enhanced my PGCE year, knowing that every child matters and has the right to an education. I enjoy working and supporting other members of staff which creates a team ethos and feel it is vital within a school community; however I can work as an individual too. I’m aware that there are elements of my own learning that I need to concentrate on as an NQT; however I’m a motivated person and I’m more than willing, and dedicated to progress with any courses or training which will enhance my role as a teacher. In my own time I enjoy keeping active by walking and swimming. I take great care in raising money for charities and completed ‘Walk the Wight’ for Earl Mountbatten Hospice and CLIC Sargent. I like to attend theatrical performances and seen many already this year which I feel also enhances my role as a Drama Teacher. |
